Welcome to the Establish, Maintain & Evaluate a Safe Workplace course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in establishing, maintaining, resourcing, consulting, controlling, training, recording, evaluating and improving WHS management arrangements for a work area according to organisational WHS objectives, consultation requirements, risk management procedures and workplace responsibilities.
Establishing, maintaining and evaluating a safe workplace involves developing a WHS management system, communicating WHS policies, identifying duty holders and responsibilities, allocating required financial and human resources, establishing consultation arrangements, resolving WHS issues and maintaining procedures for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control. This work is important because effective WHS management helps ensure workplace personnel understand their responsibilities, risks are identified during routine work and workplace change, controls are selected and improved through the hierarchy of control, expert advice is sought when required, WHS training is provided and records are maintained to support informed decisions and ongoing system improvement.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to establish a WHS management system for a work area; locate, adapt, adopt and communicate WHS policies; identify duty holders and responsibilities; approve financial and human resources; establish and maintain consultation arrangements; resolve WHS issues and communicate outcomes; develop procedures for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control; include hazards in planning, design and evaluation of workplace change; select and implement controls using the hierarchy of control; identify control inadequacies and provide resources for new controls; identify and request expert WHS advice; develop and provide induction and training programs; maintain records for injury and disease patterns and WHS decisions; and measure, evaluate, improve and maintain the WHS management system.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can establish, maintain and evaluate a safe workplace by implementing WHS management arrangements, communicating policies and responsibilities, supporting consultation and issue resolution, managing hazards and risks, resourcing controls and training, maintaining WHS records and evaluating system performance to support organisational WHS objectives.

1. Establishing a WHS management system for a work area.
2. Locating, adapting, adopting and communicating WHS policies that define organisational commitment to WHS compliance.
3. Identifying duty holders and defining WHS responsibilities for workplace personnel.
4. Identifying and approving financial and human resources required for the WHS management system.
5. Establishing and maintaining effective WHS consultation arrangements.
6. Resolving WHS issues raised through participation and consultation arrangements.
7. Communicating consultation and participation outcomes to required personnel.

9. Including hazard identification in planning, design and evaluation stages of workplace change.
10. Selecting and implementing risk controls according to the hierarchy of control measures.

15. Measuring, evaluating, improving and maintaining the WHS management system to achieve organisational WHS objectives.
