Background
KIF5B, encoded by the KIF5B gene, is the ubiquitously-expressed heavy chain of kinesin-1 that converts ATP into mechanical force to drive anterograde transport of mitochondria, lysosomes, ER/Golgi-derived vesicles, mRNAs, and GLUT4/CD36 glucose/fatty-acid transporter-containing granules along microtubules, thereby governing mitochondrial positioning, metabolic homeostasis, insulin secretion, neuronal dendritic spine plasticity, synaptic receptor trafficking, and cytokinesis .
