Shamal Wind combines Chip Wickham's spiritual jazz expeditions with hard-won schoolings in the funk. Drawing on influences like Yusef Lateef and Sahib Shihab, the album rests on Chip's many-sided experience as a musician, spanning left-field beat experiments to hard-hitting funk heavyweights. Like the Persian Gulf winds referenced in the album title, which often mark the shift to a new season, this album signals a new chapter for Chip, opening up a newfound energy and inclusiveness in his music, and further expanding on what he achieved in the past year. "Shamal Wind" is a heavy record, built on strong foundations. Following his critically acclaimed 2017 debut, La Sombra, Shamal Wind adds Arab-influenced percussion to the mix, most notably on the title track. Elsewhere, 'Barrio 71' sees him nodding to Shihab: high energy, lyrical and absorbing, with sax and the vibraphone taking the lead. 'Snake Eyes' taps into the meditative exaltations of modal jazz, while 'Soho Strut' nods to the jazz fusion, funk-influenced side of Chip's playing. Interesting pillowcase that does run cool to the touch
To begin: I'm a 64 y/o woman who still gets hot flashes, despite air-conditioning and a fan blowing on me at night. It's the sheets off then blankets on routine that so many of us know. I ordered this pillowcase hoping that I would find some kind of relief in the night, even it was only for my head.
The fabric is very unusual. It's a silky nylon blend, very swishy and soft. It reminds me of luxury, expensive women's lingerie. It's extremely slippery, moreso when you have your head on it; there certainly won't be any resistance or pulling on the hair all night.
I washed it before using it, put it in a mesh bag to protect it from getting snagged. It washed and dried as good as new. One thing to note: because it is so slippery the pillow may want to slide a little out of the pillowcase.
I slept quite well and did not experience any heat or sweating on it.
The reason for the 4* and not 5* is the price, at almost $20 it is a bit pricey for a rectangle of nylon fabric. I could see if it were real silk, but it's not. Otherwise it's exactly what it purports to be.
