This is the inspiring story of Alan Sutton, in his own words, of how he transformed his working life as a flagger and kerber on the streets of Bradford to become one of the longest serving physiotherapists at Leeds United.

An aspiring footballer who turned down a professional contract, his journey took him to 1960s Canada, where he landed with no job and nowhere to stay. Finding gruelling work as a labourer on the urban building projects of a fast-modernising nation, he spent over a year travelling across the country working with a diverse range of people. He was determined to remain within the sport he loved and played for Kitchener Kickers, before returning to Bradford to take up football coaching alongside running his own building company.

In his 30s, he overcame his lack of formal qualifications and decided to retrain as a physiotherapist. His first job was at Fourth Division Halifax Town, at the same time moving into the world of Rugby League with Mansfield Marksmen and Halifax RLFC. He was with Halifax when they won the League Championship in 1986.

Appointed to Leeds United by Billy Bremner, Sutton embarked on a career at the club spanning four decades. As a key member of the back-room staff, and for many years their one and only physio, unheard of in today’s modern game, he supported Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds to success, winning the Second Division and the First Division Championships. He witnessed the continued growth of the club through the early years of the Premier League and was there during the struggles of administration and relegation, becoming a casualty of its financial woes.

With the job of getting the players match fit, not just physically but mentally, he has worked with players at all levels, from the first team to the Academy both at Elland Road and their training ground at Thorp Arch. As a well-known and much respected stalwart of the club, he provides a fascinating insight behind the scenes of those turbulent years, as well as his own relationships with many of the most well- known and controversial players and managers, all told with professionalism, honesty and a fair amount of Yorkshire humour.

About the Author

Alan Sutton was born to a working-class family in post-war industrial Bradford.

A schoolboy footballer, who realised he would never make the top-flight, he turned his sights on working behind the scenes instead.

Working his way up to the role of physio at Leeds United, he was at the club for almost 30 years. His time there took him all over the world where he has met and worked with some of the greatest names in football.

Now retired, he lives with his wife in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire.

Nice looking medium sized backpack purse
Color: Pink
Although it says nylon in the description, mine is a soft pleather in a soft pink color. Although it has a lot of pockets for storage, it isn't large capacity. It is good for a wallet, phone, water bottle, sandwich, perhaps a cosmetic bag, and that's about it. I do not like pink accessories but this is a creamy light tone of pink and looks nice. The straps are adjustable and very comfortable in the same padded pleather. Lightweight.

Great to take on a trip
Color: Black
We love to cruise and always take an extra backpack with us so we can load up on the travel booty and have a place to put it. Works well as your "one plus" item on the airlines. So the quality on this backpack is just fine. No issues at all. Nothing was falling apart or coming off. Very small when you fold it up which is great for packing in your suitcase. Holds a ton of stuff.... I'd do some shopping to make sure this fits your needs. There are a ton of backpack's in this price range and some appear to have more features.... Also looks... some are cooler looking, but that's just my opinion...even though I'm right... This will do well for you as others will do too... You get a 30 day return policy with this so you could try it out first to see if you like it... if not, return it... nothing to loose...

Decent basic backpack
Color: Green
This is a good, basic backpack. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it's a solid choice. The sizing is average, it will hold several books and notebooks. The padding felt adequate for most items, but I'm not sure how much I would trust it with an expensive Mac book. The straps were easy to adjust and padded enough. I appreciate that it could be folded up and put into another bag if you needed an extra bag while traveling - it would make a good day pack. Overall a good deal for what it is.

Sturdy, attractive, comfortable, large capacity; lightweight, back strap to fit luggage
Color: Green, Color: Green
There are several good features for this BAGOK Lightweight Nylon Backpack, starting with the attractive green color that I chose. It is light weight and foldable yet has lots of pockets. The stitching is good, and the zippers work nicely. The back adjustable straps have padding and netting for cooling. There is also a handle on top for carrying and a backstrap to fit over luggage. On the front, there are two zippered compartments. The small one at the top could hold a wallet or passport or tickets. The larger front pocket is roomy with the zipper under an overhanging fabric. Inside is lined with black nylon. The frontmost large compartment extends the length and width of the backpack. The larger main compartment is at the back and has padding to safely store a laptop, e reader or other electronics. There are two nylon pockets inside the main compartment on one side. There are two outer side pockets. I was able to fit a water bottle in them when the inside was empty. However, if the entire backpack is filled, I don't think a water bottle will fit. One drawback is the side pockets are not elasticized--they don't stretch. I will use this for day trips and travel. It is too large to be a personal item on airlines, but it could be a carryon. You can get a lot of things in it. The nylon material is sturdy and should stand up to wear. I am short, 5'2" female and I could adjust the straps to be comfortable for me. And it does fold up for storage between uses. This could also withstand daily use for hiking, work or school
