SPL1500 Antenna Splitter VHF/AIS

An AIS receiver or transponder requires a VHF antenna, but Digital Yacht’s SPL1500 AIS-VHF antenna splitter allows an existing antenna to be used for both the AIS and VHF (DSC). Unlike most simple splitters, it can also be used with a class B transponder system and it incorporates special circuitry to ensure safe operation of the two transmitting devices.

The unit has three simple connections - one input for the main VHF antenna and then outputs for the AIS receiver/transponder and another for the DSC VHF. It utilizes Digital Yacht’s ZeroLoss™ technology, to ensure the very best possible reception and transmission from all devices. Most importantly it is also fail safe, so should the unit ever stop working or lose power, it will not affect the main VHF operation. Until now, Digital Yacht, have recommended a dedicated antenna for a receiver or transponder.  However, with the new this new ZeroLoss™ technology, we can now offer a solution that greatly simplifies installation whilst maintaining performance.

The unit is waterproof and matches the aesthetics of the current AIT1500, so can easily be integrated into any vessel. It is suitable for operation on 12V or 24V systems and features three status LEDs that show the unit is powered correctly and when the AIS or VHF transmits.

Features:

  • Enables an existing VHF antenna to be used for both the standard VHF and AIS system
  • ZeroLoss™ technology for exceptional performance
  • Works with all Class B transponders and receivers
  • Supplied with power cable, PL259-PL259 cable assembly and BNC-BNC cable assembly for easy installation (all cables 0.75m long)
  • 12V or 24V 0peration and low power consumption
  • Fail safe operation
  • Same size and design as the AIT1500
  • Makes installation of an AIS receiver or transponder very quick and simple
  • Saves on additional antenna clutter

inexpensive usb3.1 gen 2 hub with PD
This USB3.1 gen 2 hub is well made, featuring VIA Labs controller (device id 2109:2822) and is made in China. It looks nice and performs according to the specs. I wish usb-c socket supported TB3/Alt DP cable to connect a display to it, but it is apparently made mainly for power delivery. I think the hub is a good value.

premium feel in the hand.
Can't really say whether it's that good or not elecronics wise since I didn't test it but it works like it's supposed to. Meanwhile, the housing oh man. It's premium. It feels like hard aluminum or something, very nice. Edges are rounded too with just the right sharpness like a macbook. Others would've been plastic. This is really nice for the price and if the specs really are 10Gbps, that's really good because most in this price range is 5Gbps.

Failed to support desktop PCs with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports
Does not work with my HP mini PC with USB 3.2 gen 2 ports - when connecting USB portable SSDs to the hub. You won't believe it, but many USB 3.2 Gen 2 hubs only support laptops not desktop PCs (except hubs that have dedicated power supply for higher power USB devices e.g. SSD/HDDs) when connecting USB portable SSDs to the hub. We need a major fix from many of the USB hub vendors so these products can work with desktop PCs that have USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. Workaround: Just directly connect the USB portable SSD to the PC instead. If you need more USB ports, pick up a good old USB 3.0 hub. They're working correctly with portable USB SSDs when working with desktop PCs. (You'd need a powered USB hub if you're connecting 2 or more portable SSDs - do your own calculation: 5V - 1A per SSD/HDD).
