Notes

Classical-Contemporary: Original compositions by G. Gaslini. Orchestra and Choir of the Marrucino Theater - Chieti, Giorgio Gaslini conductor and pianist. 24bit/88.2Khz High Definition Digital Live Recording at Teatro Marrucino - Chieti, on February, 6th, 2007

"Today it's more difficult to write a songwriting project than a symphony," Giorgio Gaslini said some time ago, after having already composed over a hundred—recorded and released by this label—perhaps to convince himself that it was important not to lose his touch with the great classical orchestra. And so, in the space of a few years, his elusive, neither frugal nor uniform, and constantly expanding catalog has been enriched with a series of new symphonic-concert works: with or without piano, for one or more orchestras. The six diplomas he earned at the Milan Conservatory are recovered and proudly asserted, and a dialogue is reopened with "contemporary music," as he defines it in his books: that is, with his more or less forced academic training. The last four are gathered here.
In practice, listening to the music and leafing through the scores, neat and 'speaking', the temptation to force them into a stylistic box is fleeting. The music, which summarises a recent portion of the author's never-dormant creativity, opens up, to use a familiar lexicon, to a repertoire that revives Gaslini's ancient aim of "total music": an expression of sounds that leaves no room for "experimentalism as an end in itself" nor for "presumptions of stylistic value" because it is dedicated to "loving and embracing diverse musical expressions at all levels of humanity". On the programme we have three first performances (Blue Symphony from 2005, Moto velocetto perpetuo and Interno Intorno from 2006) and Porter Portrait for solo piano and orchestra (2001) premiered in Milan. This last score, which Gaslini, in his dual role as pianist and conductor, electrifyingly recreates and whose title already declares its musical substance, is both the extraneous and revealing subject of the entire composition.

The recording was made with a sophisticated high-resolution multi-channel system, strictly live, in the Marrucino Theatre in Chieti: it will therefore be possible to hear throughout the performance a series of small noises and "breathings" of an attentive, but, thank goodness, alive, audience!!!

Entertaining, informative, without being overwhelming.
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Got it for, basically, half-off standard retail. At that price, it's a fine addition to the WWII library. Some interesting information displayed in a mostly entertaining way. I get that battle maps are always a challenge (maps are static - battles are dynamic). This does a fairly adequate job - better than most battle maps - though far from groundbreaking. item arrived well packed - no issues with binding (as some others seem to report). Though the book overall is a bit "warped" and several of the maps are mis-printed or mis-cut as to make them unusable. 3 bad out of 300 - not horrible - again at the price I paid. If the subject interest you - I'd suggest getting - but not a "must have".

For the history buff or student - this is worth the purchase
Format: Hardcover
Detailed, individual maps and history on the battles of World War II. It isn’t too overwhelming for the student and is an enjoyable read for the history buff. Hardback so it will ensure lots of reading and reviews, durable pages too (not those thin, flimsy, easily tearable pages!) - this book will likely stand the test of our schooling years and beyond.
