A properly striking giant millipede from Thailand and surrounding Southeast Asia, the Thai Ruby Banded Millipede combines an impressive dark cylindrical body with bright red bands, legs, and antennae. Adults reach 12-18cm in length, making them one of the more dramatic millipede options available in the UK hobby. They're members of the Spirostreptidae family — the giant millipedes — and share the characteristic slow, deliberate movement and gentle nature of the group.

What You're Getting

  • SpeciesThyropygus sp. (specific species varies by import)
  • Origin — Thailand and surrounding Southeast Asian forests
  • Adult size — 12-18cm typical, some specimens slightly larger
  • Appearance — dark glossy body with prominent red bands, red legs and antennae
  • Lifespan — properly long-lived, typically 5-7 years in captivity
  • Behaviour — calm, slow-moving, primarily nocturnal
  • Difficulty level — intermediate; not as forgiving as common isopods but accessible for keepers with bioactive experience

Husbandry Essentials

Enclosure

  • Size — minimum 30L for a small group; larger preferred
  • Orientation — primarily floor space rather than height
  • Ventilation — moderate; balance humidity retention with airflow
  • Lid — secure but ventilated

Substrate

Deep substrate is properly critical for these burrowing millipedes:

  • Depth — minimum 10-15cm; deeper if possible
  • Composition — coconut fibre or peat-free compost mixed with decaying hardwood pieces
  • Topping — generous layer of oak, beech, or magnolia leaf litter
  • Calcium — cuttlebone or crushed shells always available
  • Decaying wood — properly essential dietary component

Browse our accessories collection for leaf litter, decaying wood, cuttlebone, and substrate components.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature — 22-26°C ideal; tolerates 20-28°C
  • Humidity — 70-85% with proper ventilation
  • Maintenance — mist regularly, ensure substrate stays moist but not waterlogged

UK keepers will typically need supplemental heating during winter months — a heat mat with thermostat works well, positioned to one side of the enclosure to create a gradient.

Diet

Thai Ruby Banded Millipedes are properly detritivores:

  • Staple — decaying hardwood and leaf litter (the foundation of their diet)
  • Vegetables — cucumber, sweet potato, carrot, leafy greens (offered in moderation)
  • Fruit — occasional banana, apple, melon
  • Calcium — cuttlebone, crushed eggshell, calcium-rich substrate additions
  • Avoid — citrus, anything with pesticides, processed foods

Remove uneaten fresh food within 24-48 hours to prevent mould.

Important Safety Notes

Defensive Chemistry

Like most Spirostreptidae millipedes, Thai Ruby Banded Millipedes secrete defensive chemicals (benzoquinones) when stressed or threatened. Properly worth knowing:

  • The secretion can stain skin temporarily (typically brown/purple)
  • It can cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling
  • Never rub eyes or face after contact
  • Keep handling brief and gentle to minimise stress

Pesticide Sensitivity

Millipedes are properly extremely sensitive to pesticides — far more than isopods. Properly critical:

  • Use only organic, pesticide-free leaf litter and wood
  • Avoid garden centre plants treated with systemic insecticides
  • Keep enclosure away from rooms where insecticide sprays are used
  • Never use flea treatments on pets in the same room

Bioactive Setup Compatibility

Thai Ruby Banded Millipedes work well in bioactive setups alongside other detritivores:

  • Isopods — most species coexist peacefully; tropical isopods share similar climate needs. Browse our isopods collection
  • Springtails — proper bioactive partners that complement millipede activity. Browse our springtails collection
  • Other millipedes — typically peaceful with conspecifics and other species

Properly worth being aware that millipedes will sometimes eat eggs or very small mancae from isopod colonies, though established colonies typically outpace any predation.

Handling

Properly minimal handling is best for these millipedes:

  • Allow them to walk across your hand rather than picking them up
  • Never grip the body — risk of damage
  • Keep handling sessions brief
  • Wash hands thoroughly afterwards
  • Avoid handling during or after moulting (vulnerable period)

Live Arrival

All our millipedes are shipped with proper packaging and our standard live arrival guarantee. Browse our wider millipedes collection for other available species.

Needed replacement, 2nd one works OK
The first one I received had a broken latching mechanism. Not a shipping issue, as the box was fine, it just wouldn't latch the attachments because the mechanism wouldn't come all the way out. After getting a replacement the 2nd one worked better. It has 3 settings for soft, normal, and pulse. For me, the normal put out the best force for clearing out bits. After washing with it for about 30 seconds though I still don't feel it cleans we well as real floss, or even a waterpik, but it does help after brushing. I will add it to my routine as it does help flush out some things, but it won't be replacing my flossing. It is sort of portable, in that can be packed away and holds a charge, but it's still pretty large and takes up a good amount of space in a toiletry bag. It's not bad, but not really outstanding either.

I like this better than my name brand unit
🔵 Features: The water pick boasts a generously sized reservoir, which is a standout feature. It also comes with a convenient USB charger, offers 3 speed settings (normal, soft, and pulse), and features quick and easy detachable heads. 🔵 Power: In terms of power, comparing it to my current unit revealed no noticeable differences in pressure or volume to the naked eye. Both units effortlessly deliver a stream of water up to 12 feet. 🔵 Heads: The water pick includes a plethora of heads, more than most people would likely need. Personally, I would have preferred a lifetime supply of the simple angled head picks, but the variety provided caters to all preferences. 🔵 Overall: After using it for a few days, I found that it performs admirably. When placed side by side with my old unit, I consistently reach for the 7AM2M unit, primarily due to its larger reservoir. In all other aspects, I find them comparable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this water pick to others.

Well designed portable water flosser that's holding up so far
There are a number of such portable water flossers on Amazon, but this is one of the better ones IMO. The water pressure is adequate, with enough settings to allow you to ramp up (or keep using on a lower setting if desired). One nice feature is that the tank detaches easily and this makes filling under a tap easier than other units which don't have an easily detached tank. The tank shape is also a bit fatter so it's not too long along any one dimension. The tank capacity of 300 ml is adequate for a single use. The standard suite of flosser heads are included - flossing itself, peridontal, and one for braces. The tongue cleaner attachment is also there but I prefer to use a separate tongue cleaner tool. Charging is via USB-C and while the port isn't super water proof, there's no damage to the unit yet. Battery life is typical at about 20-30 days with twice a day usage.

Quit working in a month
Bought one. It quit working. They sent another… it never worked right before finally dying on me the same way. Looks like it’s not even an available product anymore. But if it ever does come back.. don’t buy it.

Not what I expected!
I have never used a dental flosser before, and it showed by the mess I made haha. I can say, this isn't for me, but I can see the appeal. It is relatively lightweight and comes with a lot of different attachments. Loading it up with water is easy and doesn't take much effort. I would call this portable, even though it is a little big. I can only stand the "soft mode". If I choose any other, my mouth is overwhelmed. Overall, I would definitely recommend this if you have experience with dental flossers. It was hard to use at first but you get the hang of it.
