The Chaffee was the primary US light tank at the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 and suffered heavy losses against North Korean T 34 85 tanks, to which its 75mm gun proved inadequate. Despite this early vulnerability, it continued to serve in reconnaissance and infantry support roles throughout the conflict.
