Resilient Coastal Herb with Healing Leaves
Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a striking, herbaceous perennial known for its bold, glossy foliage and vigorous, upright growth. Thick, hollow stems rise from a basal crown, supporting large, deeply lobed leaves that are bright green, tender, and slightly succulent in texture. When cut, the stems exude a golden-yellow sap—a distinctive trait that hints at the plant’s richness. In its second year, it sends up tall flower stalks topped with airy umbels of creamy white blossoms, adding height and a delicate contrast to its otherwise lush form.

Native to the coastal regions of Japan, particularly the Izu Islands, Ashitaba thrives in mild, maritime climates where humidity, ocean breezes, and mineral-rich soils shape its growth. It is remarkably fast-growing and regenerative—its name translates to “tomorrow’s leaf,” reflecting its ability to quickly replace harvested foliage. Highly valued for both its edible leaves and unique phytochemical profile, it stands apart as a plant that is as productive as it is visually distinctive in the garden.

Cultural & Culinary Significance
Ashitaba has been deeply woven into Japanese culture for centuries, especially in the Izu archipelago where it is traditionally consumed as a daily health food. The leaves, stems, and even roots are used in a variety of preparations—from tempura and noodle dishes to teas and powders—valued for their slightly bitter, earthy flavor and nutritional density. In traditional practices, it has been associated with longevity and vitality, often incorporated into regional diets as both nourishment and preventative care. Its golden sap, rich in chalcones, has drawn attention in herbal traditions and modern wellness circles alike. Ashitaba’s enduring presence in coastal communities reflects a deep connection between plant, place, and the rhythms of daily life.

Growing Tips
(Also known as: Tomorrow’s Leaf, Japanese Angelica, Angelica keiskei, Ashitaba)
Ashitaba grows best in full sun to partial shade, with some afternoon protection in hotter climates. It prefers rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture, thriving in conditions that mimic its native coastal habitat. Regular watering supports continuous leaf production, though the plant can tolerate brief dry periods once established.

It performs best in mild climates and is somewhat sensitive to extreme heat and hard frost, typically suited for USDA Zones 7–10 with protection in colder areas. Apply a balanced fertilizer periodically to encourage vigorous growth. Harvest leaves regularly to promote fresh, tender regrowth and prevent early flowering. Minimal pruning is needed beyond harvesting, though older plants may benefit from division or replacement after flowering. It adapts well to container growing, especially in cooler regions. Growth is fast under ideal conditions, and good airflow helps prevent issues in humid environments. Leaves can be harvested continuously once the plant is established, often within a few months of planting.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.
