Юрій Іванович Яновський (1902 – 1954) – український прозаїк, поет, драматург, журналіст, редактор і сценарист ВУФКУ, художній керівник Одеської кінофабрики. Сучасники називали його 'добрим генієм українського кіно'.

Для свого першого роману Ю. Яновський розглядав варіанти назв: 'Українське хворе кіно', 'Мемуари редактора каторги', 'Мемуари старої людини', 'Мемуари про море', 'Мемуари То-Ма-Кі', 'Мемуари голого редактора'. 'Майстер корабля' – остаточна назва твору, сюжет якого був незвичним, новим для тогочасної літератури.
