Multiple sclerose is een onvoorspelbare en daardoor ook mentaal slopende ziekte. Lies beschrijft haar strijd tegen deze valse tegenspeler, die duivels listig haar leven probeert te ruïneren. Lies kreeg klappen, ging soms neer, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Maar zij brak nooit, krabbelde altijd weer overeind. Omdat ze graag leeft, omdat ze van mensen, dieren en dingen houdt, omdat ze zich niet gewonnen wil geven. Want daar heeft Lies het vooral over in dit boek: over haar hunkering naar het leven, naar liefde, naar toekomst. 'Ik ben optimistisch', zegt ze, niettegenstaande haar progressieve achteruitgang en de loden uitzichtloosheid die op haar weegt.
Dit boek heeft ze geschreven om de mensen, die in een vergelijkbare situatie terechtkomen, te zeggen dat ze nooit mogen opgeven. Hoe moeilijk het leven soms ook is, het blijft altijd zinvol.
