The Everlasting Hunt for Money

Traditionally, artists have preferred to avoid talking about money in favour of freedom. But with the backlash against neoliberalism, especially in art schools, the talk recently has become about nothing but money.

The impecunious  and precarious state that artists and designers find themselves in, has created a generation of graduates hell-bent on dismantling the system they rightfully see as the cause of so much inequality, climate damage, and excess materialism.

For them, it might all start with the unpaid internship.  This is not a new phenomenon; it began in the government and banking sectors before being adopted by culture. By the mid-aughts it was common practice. “Don’t point that gun at him,” Bill Murray tells an angry pirate in Wes Anderson’s The Life  Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), “he’s an unpaid intern.” The next year, Kanye West (as he was still known) rapped “Maybe you could be my intern”. Foolish and demeaned, the unpaid intern across almost every creative pursuit had become a necessary step towards getting paid, and yet was confusingly branded as ‘foolish’ by claimants of power.

Graduates now, however, are done. They expect to be paid, and not just for an internship, but for work in the fields of art, design and architecture. Gone is the era when art was seen as dirty, and art and commerce tagged as opposing forces. Dismantled are the days when any artist who tried to make money would end up unable to make art.

In issue 84 of DAMNº we visit what is happening  - how creatives are using the system for change, for inspiration, for debate. We look at the complex role played by money in internships, schools, exhibitions, museums, brands, and discourse - we home in on critical design, activistic art, experimental economic models, and how creatives are embarking on doing more than just reflecting or communicating social ills. They are striving for tangible alternatives.

Amazing. A bit of a job to set it up but worth it!
Color: Black, Color: Black
Excellent quality. Sturdy and strong. The screws that come with it are awful. Get yourself some different ones. Takes a while to set it up and get it all measured. I did it while I was setting up my new Flexi-spot E7 Plus standing desk. Wanted to get it all done at the same time. At first. I thought it might be overkill, but I am sooooo glad I did get this. Now my computer moves along with the desk. It looks great. I bet it has improved the air flow around my computer as well. Looks sleek and cool. I might have set it a bit too tight around my case and as a result I have to shimmy it to get it out of the holder if I have to do any work on the computers internals. But at least I know it's secure. My suggestion would be to leave a little bit of slack to avoid this in your setup. Maybe like a 1/4 inch would be ok. The pads should hold it in place anyway. May loosen mine up if I find the time. But it feels totally secure on the desk with no wobble or shaking. Great product. Also I'm a woman in my late fifties 😃and I was able to set it all up on my own. So don't be intimidated ladies, you can do it too. I also bought two of the ultimate set up cable management trays. Great products. Note for anyone from the Ultimate Setup company who might read this. Please provide better quality wood screws and some extra ones) I stripped three of the cheap ones that came with this. And it took forever to drill them in because they weren't strong enough. Then it would be perfect.

Awesome quality
Color: White, Color: White
Take your time installing! It comes with all the instructions and templates. Make sure you’re screwing this into solid wood. I would not recommend you hang your expensive PC from a particle board table. My Pc fits in well and it’s compatible with a ton of different sizes. Mine has been mounted under my desk for about 6 months and is rock solid. I will say, mine is balancing in there. If I don’t have it at its center of gravity, it could tip out. You can adjust it with the various screw holes but make sure you mount it into something solid.

PC holder that looks great and works on large PCs for easy under desk mounting
Color: Black
After a lot of research and trial and error I finally found the Heavy Duty Under Desk PC Holder. It is the only under desk PC holder that looks good and is able to hold my HP Omen 45L where I want it - under my desk. Putting it together is relatively easy as was the installation to the desk. No messing with cables or round steel tubes to get the job done. The metal is solid, the black powder coating looks great, and the installation hardware is a;l there including a drill bit, hex key, and wrench. You just need to bring a screw driver for the wood screws to attach it to your desk. Read the instructions and make sure you take the depth of your PC into account when attaching the PC holder to your desk, especially if you have a standing desk with motors.
