Ellsworth Kelly is considered one of the most important abstract painters, sculptors and printmakers of his generation. His career was marked by the autonomous path he took without schooling at an art school or participation in an art movement.
Kelly drew on the contact between abstraction and nature from which he derived shapes and colours. His efforts to suppress gesture in favour of spatial unity played a central role in the development of abstract art in America.
