De vlag van Sri Lanka is een van de meest karakteristieke vlaggen ter wereld, met een goudgele achtergrond, een bruine leeuw met een zwaard, en twee verticale banen in groen en oranje. Het ontwerp is rijk aan culturele en religieuze symboliek.

Symboliek en achtergrond

De leeuw met het zwaard staat symbool voor moed en de Singalese bevolking. De vier bladeren in de hoeken verwijzen naar de bo-boom en vertegenwoordigen boeddhistische waarden zoals vriendelijkheid en kalmte. De oranje en groene banen symboliseren respectievelijk de Tamil- en moslimgemeenschap, waarmee de vlag de multi-etnische samenleving van Sri Lanka weerspiegelt. De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 22 mei 1972, toen Sri Lanka een republiek werd. Het is sindsdien een krachtig nationaal symbool van eenheid en trots.
