Thanos is terug en hij wil zijn plek weer innemen als absolute alleenheerser van het Black Quadrant. Maar dan komt hij erachter dat hij stervende is. Terwijl hij het heelal doorkruist op zoek naar een mogelijk medicijn en daarbij onder meer op weerstand stuit van de Shi'ar, smeedt zijn zoon Thane een sinister plan waarvoor hij de hulp inroept van enkele machtige krijgers.
