Ze hoopt dat haar geheime liefde, koning Willem II, haar woonplaats kan helpen door Alkmaar stadsrechten te schenken. Ze ziet zich echter voor een heel ander probleem gesteld wanneer ze van hem in verwachting blijkt te zijn…

Koning Willem is verwikkeld in een machtsstrijd met West-Friesland en hij doet er alles aan om dat opstandige volk aan zich te onderwerpen. Ondertussen wordt hij vader van twee zoons: de wettige Floris en de bastaard Alard.

Na Willems dood ziet Floris zich genoodzaakt het werk van zijn vader af te maken, en snakt Alard naar erkenning van de grafelijke familie. Als de twee jongemannen door het noodlot samengebracht worden, bundelen ze hun krachten om de strijd met hun vijanden aan te gaan en de familie-eer te redden.

Met Bloedlijn schreef Simone van der Vlugt een prachtig verhaal over macht, liefde en familiebanden. Als geen ander weet ze de levens van de hoogste kringen en die van het gewone volk beeldend te beschrijven. De middeleeuwen komen zo dichterbij dan ooit.
