De vlag van Guatemala bestaat uit drie verticale banen: lichtblauw aan de zijkanten en wit in het midden. In het midden van de witte baan staat het nationale wapen van Guatemala. Deze elegante en betekenisvolle vlag is een symbool van vrijheid, onafhankelijkheid en nationale trots.

Symboliek en achtergrond

De lichtblauwe banen verwijzen naar de ligging van Guatemala tussen de Atlantische en de Stille Oceaan. De witte baan symboliseert vrede en zuiverheid. Het wapen toont een quetzal (de nationale vogel, symbool van vrijheid), twee gekruiste geweren en zwaarden, een lauwerkrans en een perkament met de datum van de onafhankelijkheid: 15 september 1821. De huidige vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 17 augustus 1871.
