Bougainvillea van herkomst veelal afkomstig uit de tropen en subtropen van Zuid-Amerika. In de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw in Europa geïntroduceerd, nu veel voorkomend in de landen rondom de Middellandse zee. Het zijn heesterachtige planten met twijgen voorzien van doornen. De bloempjes zijn klein maar worden omgeven door opvallend gekleurde (veelal paars) papierachtige schutbladeren die lang aan de plant blijven zitten.
