Na zijn overdonderende debuutroman Midden in een jazztijd (1931) en zijn succesvolle tweede roman, Twee mensen samen (1932), genoot Sønderby de status van bestsellerauteur en werd hij vergeleken met F. Scott Fitzgerald en Ernest Hemingway. Beide romans behoren inmiddels onherroepelijk tot de Deense canon. Om bij te komen van het overrompelende succes zocht Knud Sønderby in 1935 de rust en de natuur van Groenland op, waar hij het materiaal verzamelde voor zijn roman Koude vlammen (1940). Het verblijf resulteerde in 1941 ook in de prozaschetsen Een zomer op Groenland, de eerste in een reeks essaybundels, die met hun subtiele vereniging van lichtheid en weemoed beschouwd worden als hoogtepunten in de naoorlogse Deense literatuur. In zeven essays met prachtige natuurbeschrijvingen tekent Sønderby sfeervolle beelden van zijn zomerse verblijf op Groenland.

Do not buy!!! Cheap product and bad customer service! The product is rusted upon delivery. It is not stable and will not hold an umbrella rated for 22lb stand upright with water alone. They wanted me to refill the stand and send them pictures of the tilt even though the rust should warrant a full refund with shipping covered, if they were a good company. The company is giving me the run around on a return and conflicting information. They said they I would have to pay for the return, then that they would, then and try keep trying to offer me a discounted rate and charging me shipping. Here is a copy of the communication. They offered $10 telling me that rust is not covered in their warranty, even if it arrived rusty! First message: "After the returned item is delivered to our warehouse with no issue, we will return your amount." Second message: "Generally, rust can be caused by many factors and is not typically covered under our warranty. However, as a valued customer, we’d like to offer you a USD 10 price return if you choose to keep and continue using the base as it is. Please let us know if this solution works for you, and we will process it right away."
