A beautiful sunflower wall tile by Werner Meschede from the well-known series of botanical plaques he produced for MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE between 1965 and 1978.  The three-dimensional depth of the glassy surface is difficult to capture photographically but, trust us, is incredible in person.  This plaque would serve as wonderful room décor and is suitable for framing.  Engraved inverso with the standard MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE mark and form number.  Slight damage to top right corner [see photo].

WERNER MESCHEDE was one of the most significant majolica designers of the 20th century.  Born in Stuttgart in 1925, he studied under the tutelage of the ceramic artist Max Laüger and began work as a potter in Schorndorf, a small town near Stuttgart, after WWII.  In 1958 Meschede received his mastership from the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.  He was soon hired by MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE, and for many years he served as its director of screen-printing, producing architectural and garden ceramics as well, both singularly and in series.  Meschede is well known for his botanical series of majolica wall plaques and tiles, as well as numerous lava-glaze vases, crackled items, and plates.

MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE (MANUFACTORY) was established in 1901 by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden (1826–1907), at the behest of its founders, artists Wilhelm Süs (1861–1933) and Hans Thoma (1839–1924). An “idyllic” spot was chosen in the Duke’s residential city, near the palace gardens, the nexus of princely power and artistic production—a connection immortalized for the plant’s 2001 centennial by the installation of a “blue ray” (Blauer Strahl in German), a path of blue majolica tiles, physically linking the palace tower to the factory.

Süs and Thoma sought to revive the “majolica,” or faience technique, where “tin” glaze is applied to earthenware and used as a canvas for intricate colored decoration. The glaze, in reality, is a lead one, rendered white and opaque with the addition of tin oxide. Majolica’s manufacture involves dipping items in the white glaze, allowing it to dry, and then painting on designs before a second, high-temperature firing. The initial focus was on producing ceramics in the Italian Renaissance style, a choice influenced by their shared background and Süs’s prior experience running a ceramics studio. Towards the end of the decade, a signature style emerged—elaborate compositions, often including cherubim, on blue backgrounds. Eventually, MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE would become a mirror for 20th-century artistic movements, from Art Nouveau to Bauhaus.

A note on terminology: What is referred to here as “majolica,” after the German usage, is often called “maiolica” in English, to distinguish it from the Victorian-era, mass-produced earthenware that uses a clear, colored lead glaze applied over a molded relief body, fired only once. The confusion associated with these naming conventions is long-standing!

Following revolutionary unrest at the end of WWI, popular demands for the establishment of a republic forced Grand Duke Friedrich II to abdicate, a peaceful transition and a pattern seen across all other German states. With the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1918, the new Republic of Baden took over former royal properties, including MAJOLICA KARLSRUHE. The formal name Staatliche Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe was adopted in 1927 to indicate state ownership.

Despite the specificity of its name, MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE produced a wide range of artisan ceramics and was one of Germany’s leading ceramic producers generally. The quality of its work was excellent. Top designers before WWII included Ludwig König (1891–1974) and Max Läuger (1864–1952).

The factory was badly damaged by bombs in 1944 and did not return to the full-time production of decorative goods until the 1950s. By then, business had resumed much as in pre-war days, with both company-employed and freelance designers. One of the foremost post-war designers was Fridegart Glatzle (1920–2015), who joined MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE in 1951. Over the next 30 years, she produced a huge range of designs; much of her work is highly collectible. Other designers of this period included luminaries Eva Fritz-Lindner (1933–2017) and Werner Meschede (1925–1981). The company provided its artists with their own studio space, commissioning their activity.

Most MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE pieces bear the company’s name and symbol—the arms of Baden above a double-joined ‘M’ for Majolika-Manufaktur. Items are marked with a form number and, with exceptions in the late 20th, were made with red-orange clay. Product examples can be seen at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe.

The commercial production side of MAJOLIKA KARLSRUHE officially concluded its 123-year operating history at the end of 2024, with its final collection dispersed at a historic closing auction in early 2025. The site now primarily functions as a museum, hosting a foundation for the promotion of the ceramic arts.

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.

OBSESSED with this start to the series + incredible narration!
Format: Audiobook
5⭐️ 3🌶️ 5🎧 Publisher: Podium Narrators: June Deborahae, Vincent Skye, Ace Bentley Narration type: multicast, dual style Writing perspective: first person, multi POV Standard length: 9:28 Listening speed: 1.9x Tropes: why choose, sports, new adult/college, forced proximity, found family, one bed, disability, MH + neurodivergent rep 📖 I have always been a why choose lover and this is def going to be a new fav series, I can tell already! I absolutely LOVE Abby’s writing! Joey is such a great FMC — she is strong, but has a past that has pain, making her a complex and layered character with some mystery. The guys are amazing as well — they are all different and react in such varying ways to Joey showing up on the scene! If you are going in expecting a full on dark romance with kidnapping vibes, this is not it. This is definitely a romance with darker themes, but these guys treat their girl well, though they may be misguided at times (cough, Decker, cough 🤣). One of my absolute fav things about this book is the incredible representation — two of the guys deal with chronic pain (RA + lupus), another is on the spectrum, and Joey has anxiety that can lead to panic attacks and more severe issues. As someone who deals with chronic pain (an autoimmune arthritis in the RA family) I love to see characters like me in books! I have no doubt by the end of the series I am going to love all the guys equally, but right now I am falling HARD for Kylian (who doesn’t love stats daddy?!) and Locke is firmly in second place. Decker and Kendrick have some work to do, but I’m sure this is all according to Abby’s master plan. And wowwww that cliffy was a painful one! I’ll be starting book 2 in T-minus 3 seconds! 🎧 This audio was phenomenal! All three narrators did an incredible job — the casting was absolutely on point!! June deBorahae narrated the majority of the book as most is from Joey’s POV and she was magnificent. Her transition from narrator internal voice to dialogue was always very clear, as were her transitions in dialogue between all characters which was an impressive feat with the number of characters she had going on. She truly blew me away as Joey though. The emotion she showed was incredible — going from tough and ready to go head to head with anyone, to exceedingly compassionate and kind, to anxious and sucked into memories of the past. Vincent Skye voiced Decker, Locke, and Kylian and did a great job with all of them. Each was voiced in a way that was fitting for their character and personality. I especially love the way he portrayed Kylian. And last but not least, Ace Bentley narrated the part of Kendrick to perfection. His portrayal was so fitting for his tough and grumpy ways. While Kendrick only had one POV chapter in this book, Abby tells me we can expect more from Ace as Kendrick in the next one!!

Amazing Story & Narration🎧 Intriguing Series Start!
Format: Kindle
Too Safe Boys of Lake Chapel By: Abby Millsaps Narrated by: June deBorahae, Vincent Sky, Ace Bentley This is my first book written by Abby Millsaps and she completely blew me away. It is always great to check out new authors and even greater when they leave a huge impression on you, and that is exactly what Ms. Millsaps did. “Too Safe” is an amazing start to the “Boys of Lake Chapel” series, a steamy ‘why choose’ reverse harem sports romance and wow, that ending sure leaves you wanting more, no make that, needing more. Josephine “Joey” Meyer is turning things around for herself, starting over in a new town and college, Lake Chapel University, with a full ride scholarship. When she arrives at the school, four men greeted her, and the first words one of them says is “she is a girl”. Turns out, they were expecting the recipient of the Crusade Scholarship to be a male, and that would not be the last she sees of those four guys, Decker “Cap” Crusade, Kylian, Kendrick Taylor and Nicholas “Locke” Lockwood. Decker, Locke and Kendrick are star football players for their school’s team, and Killian, a geek, runs the stats for the team. Each one of these characters is as intriguing as the next, and we are just getting to know them and there is more to come. There is a lot of mystery behind Joey’s past, and there is a lot more to learn about each of the guys. Joey clicked with Locke, but a misunderstanding puts her in the hot seat with the guys, who vote on what to do with her and that is why she wound up living in to their elaborate home, the home of the popular boy where everyone flocks to for their massive parties. I loved how everything played out in this book, the writing, plot and world building are absolutely fantastic, as are the character growth and development. There is never a dull moment, drama is non-stop and there is some angst, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance reverse harem style. Abby Millsaps, thank you for this amazing story and the wild ride.  🎧📚🎧 June deBorahae, Vincent Sky, and Ace Bentley were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and do so with a complete understanding of who they are portraying, giving each a voice that is fitting. I loved how they took their roles and owned them, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their narration elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thank you for this fantastic listen.
