There is beautiful flame figure in the crotch and a bit of spalting along the outermost heartwood growth rings. The overall color is the deep reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood surrounded by a thin band of yellow sapwood, with a complete and well attached dark brown bark on the backside. Mesquite Bowl Blank M1174 3" x 8" x 11" 4.6 lbs. This is an elongate and very pretty half-log crotch bowl blank of Texas Honey Mesquite. There is beautiful flame figure in the crotch and a bit of spalting along the outermost heartwood growth rings. The overall color is the deep reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood surrounded by a thin band of yellow sapwood, with a complete and well-attached dark brown bark on the backside. This half-log bowl blank should be suitable for a bowl or winged vessel up to 11" in length and 3" deep. With the bark on the backside, you have the option of turning a conventional bowl or a "barky" natural-edge bowl. However, if you want a full bark edge on the "natural" rim, you will need to secure the bark with CA glue before and possibly during turning. This is a classic half-log blank, split through the center of the log. There is a thin sliver of pith present in part of the blank. There are small cracks associated with the pith that you may wish to stabilize with CA glue prior to turning. This is a GREEN to partially air-dried bowl blank, meaning that it still retains a lot of its original moisture from when it was a living tree. It has been well-sealed with Anchor Seal and is in the process of slowly drying. It was heat-treated to kill off any hungry critters that may have been burrowing inside. It was measured at 30% MC in May, 2022. If you need a current moisture content, please message us and we'll check its status for you. I've taken lots of photos of this piece; scroll down below the first 3 to see all of them. About the Tree This Texas-grown Honey Mesquite tree was harvested in El Campo, Texas in July of 2022. It was cut down by the city for reasons unknown to us, and we were happy to help save the tree from a burn pile. It is possible that this tree was damaged by the Valentine's Day Freeze that Texas suffered in February 2021, which is when our state lost a lot of beautiful trees in an unusually deep and long freeze. |

Good set of clubs for beginners to find out if golf is their game! You'll need a putter, though.

This nice inexpensive set is great for a beginner at golf, which is me--never played before. I don't evem know if I'm going to like playing, but at least I have a set of clubs so that I can give it a try...it's the exercise from walking the course that appeals to me. My son says he can teach me, even using mens clubs. I figure if I like the game, I can get a nicer set of ladies clubs and pass this set to my grandson. If I don't like the game, I can still pass the set along to my grandson! My son thought these clubs were decent weight and quality and well worth the price...the only thing missing was a putter, but we found a cheaper one to add to the set.

Good second-level pickleball paddles for a great price

I've been playing pickleball for a while now, though not ever well. I have progressed from wooden paddles and just trying things out to bundles of basic fiberglass paddles and balls to higher-end paddles that individually cost more than the "multi-paddle plus balls" bundles. I have kids and kids-in-law and grandkids, and not everyone has their own paddles. Thus, I purchased this set to get a couple more paddles.
This Amazon Basics set of 2 paddles, four balls, and a carrying case is a starter set, maybe one step up from the basic wooden paddles that I started with. The paddles are nice, light-weight but sturdy, with a decent surface that should allow some level of control. The grips are nice, and there is some additional grip tape you can use to retape a handle that wears out.
The balls are standard balls, and should get you started.
The case is similar to cases I've purchased before with other sets. Unfortunately, the makers skimped on the zipper. It only has one (another case from a similar set had two zippers), and after just a few uses, the zipper completely fell off (see photo). This makes the case completely useless, and definitely drops my rating.
But, given the price, the quality of the paddles, and the four balls, this is still a great starter set, even without a cheap carrying case. I'm happy to have the extra balls and paddles.
