This fabulous curio is the dried seed pod of the Proboscidea parviflora plant, known as the Devil's Claw, Double Claw and Unicorn plant, names that reflect the appearance of the fruit in various stages of development. Devil's Claw and Double Claw describe how the fruit looks after it has dried and split open, while Unicorn plant refers to the fleshy green fruit prior to turning brown and drying. The plant itself is a low-growing desert plant known for its stunning orchid like flowers. It is equally known for being a nuisance plant to ranchers whose livestock get them stuck on their hooves causing ambulatory problems. It is this dynamic between creature and the hitchhiking pod that is the method of seed dispersal.

Devil's Claw has been utilized as a food source and material for making baskets by Native Americans of the Southwest. According to Native lore, the pods were to be avoided if one did not wish to conceive twins. Local artisans use them in craft projects such as dream catchers and hanging talismans.

This carefully selected curio is a versatile addition to your magickal and medicinal toolkit. Each box contains two dried Devil's Claws, complete with an information sheet to guide you in their traditional and contemporary applications.

Medicinal Uses

Devil's Claw is traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Native American tribes have utilized the roots of the plant, not the seed pods, to create herbal remedies for conditions such as arthritis, muscle pain, and digestive issues. The roots can be made into teas or poultices to reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort, particularly in the joints and muscles.

Culinary Use

When it is in its young, green, and tender stage (before the pods dry and harden), can be used in culinary applications. The young, green pods of Devil's Claw can be pickled similarly to cucumbers or okra. They have a slightly tangy and bitter flavor, which makes them a unique addition to pickled vegetable assortments. In some Native American traditions, the tender young pods are added to stews or soups as a vegetable. They contribute a mild, earthy flavor and a bit of texture to the dish. The green pods can also be sliced and used in stir-fries, where their slight bitterness can complement other vegetables and proteins. Like other green vegetables, young Devil's Claw pods can be sautéed with garlic, onions, and other seasonings for a simple side dish. It’s important to note that only the young, green pods are edible. Once the pods mature and harden, they are not suitable for consumption and are primarily used for medicinal and magickal purposes.

Using Normcore Tamper
Size: 53.3mm Flat Base
This tamper is very easy to use and has a perfect weight thanks to the stainless steel build. It evenly tamps the espresso puck, and the 53.3mm fit works flawlessly with my Breville Espresso machine. The puck prep I’m able to achieve has noticeably improved the taste of my espresso. The sleek design is modern, durable, and looks great on my coffee bar.

It's what'd you would expect
Size: 58.5mm Flat Base
I work in espresso professionally and got this as a tester for ergonomic purposes. It does its job as a tamper and does level with little dusting from it being 58.5mm. The self leveling does work. However depending on my baskets (using vst now) it will.self level where the lowest part of the puck is handle side and highest.part opposite. Not an issue with the tamp but something to be mindful of. Works perfectly well on my gaggia setup...not so much commercial grade. The spring is adequate but i tend to tamp a bit harder on heavy weather days.. Build quality is fine but i would have rather used a regular style tamper. Also palm tampers pretty much need to be self leveling based on the ergonomic nature.

Solidly constructed and has a premium, hefty weight
Size: 58.5mm
Works exactly as described. Can be a bit heavy but otherwise it is a premium built product. If you have too much coffee in your basket and they're near the rim of it, coffee can get stuck to the sides of the distributor. A little annoying but easily remedied by brushing the grounds back into the basket or by "flattening" the coffee grounds in the basket first prior to distributing.

Would purchase again
Size: 58.5mm Flat Base
Fits my Gemilai portafilter perfectly. Works as expected, but can be slightly unlevel in tamping. Has a tendency to push the coffee down more on the handle side of the basket. I try to make sure I apply pressure in the middle of the tamper and it seems to make all the difference.
