Home Recording for the Singer-Songwriter returns to School of Song starting on July 6th!

Taught by renowned recording engineer and producer Philip Weinrobe, who has worked with many modern greats such as Adrianne Lenker, Theo Katzman, Florist, Hand Habits, Cass McCombs, and many more.

In this class you will learn how to make quality recordings so that you feel empowered to share your music with friends, family and the whole wide world. We will cover the fundamental technical, creative and philosophical aspects of recording music, paying close attention to techniques and ways of working that are applicable to working alone and at home, outside of the traditional recording studio environment.

Whether you've only recorded songs as voice memos or are a seasoned recordist seeking fresh perspectives, this course offers valuable methods and processes for all skill levels, enabling you to achieve your goals as a recording musician while keeping your eyes (and ears) squarely on the important stuff.

Throughout the course, you will engage in practical recording exercises and challenges that cover an array of topics, such as:

  1. Inventive recording strategies, workflows, and processes to help you navigate the intricate decision-making landscape of creating impactful recordings.
  2. In-depth exploration of microphone techniques, placement, and selection to capture the best sound possible.
  3. Introduction to digital signal processing and essential audio editing software.
  4. Learning how to layer tracks and blend different sonic elements
  5. Techniques for effective remote collaboration and recording in the digital age.

By the end of the class you will have learned to use effective techniques, processes, and tools to help you on your artistic journey. Recording and sharing music is a never-ending pursuit full of learning, growth and change. Our goal is for this class to serve as a foundational and inspirational step along that journey.

FAQ

Q: I've taken Home Recording with y'all in the past, is this the same curriculum?

A: Yes, this class is generally the same curriculum as presented in previous years, with some variation.

Q: What gear do I need to take this class?

A: To get the most out of this class, you’ll need the following:

  • a computer (or tablet) with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Logic, Pro Tools, or Ableton. GarageBand is not sufficient for this class.
  • at least 1 microphone (plus cable and stand)
  • an audio interface (to get sound from your microphone to your computer)
  • headphones (and optionally studio monitors) to listen back to your recordings

Q: How much recording experience do I need to take this class?

A: You don’t need any recording experience to take this class. However, it will be helpful to know how to:

  1. get sound from your microphones into your DAW
  2. listen back to what you’ve recorded
  3. export (or bounce) your DAW’s session into an audio file

There are numerous high quality resources available on the internet to assist with each of these steps (here is one). If you already have all the required gear listed above, it’s reasonable to learn these steps in an afternoon.

Q: I’m already comfortable recording myself at home. Should I take this class?

A: Though Philip will be spending time talking about the fundamentals of recording, he will also be spending a significant portion of the time discussing personal processes, methods, and opinions on the recording process that will be applicable and valuable to more advanced participants.

Q: Do I need to be a singer-songwriter to take this class?

A: If you don’t write songs, you are welcome to record covers for the assignments. If you don’t sing or play at all, it will be valuable to team up with a songwriter in order to complete the assignments.

Q: I can’t make the lecture time. Do I need to participate in this class live?

A: All classes are recorded and sent out after class. You do not need to be able to attend the live lectures in order to participate in the class.

Q: How many students are in the class?

A: There is no cap on enrollment. However, we will be scaling the teacher staff with the number of enrollees to ensure that everyone who needs help with technical troubleshooting has it.

Q: Is there a minimum age requirement?

A: You must be 18 to attend the class. We make exceptions on a case-by-case basis; email us at [email protected].

Q: Will Philip give me feedback on my recordings?

A: Philip will not be giving individual feedback on recordings, but will be available to answer questions during the Thursday Q+A.

Q: I'm in Europe and cannot make the live lecture or Q&A times.

A: We’re aware that the lecture and Q&A times are unrealistic for our European students for this offering. However, they are recorded and sent out afterwards. The portion of class that is not adequately replaced by a recording, the song-shares, happen at 11a PT (evening in Europe) and 6p PT. Whenever possible, we try to offer multiple sections of a class so that everyone can attend, but we are unable to in this case.

If after the first class you feel the course is not a good fit for any reason, you are welcome to a refund on the rest of the course classes. We are unable to process refunds after the second class.

Read to be challenged!
Format: Kindle
Eugene H. Peterson opens his book with an overwhelming introduction that both captured me and also struck fear into my heart. I had read the introduction before, yet had not pressed farther into the book. Yet recently was challenged to revisit this book to face the challenges of Peterson's book and seek the Holy Spirit's work in my life. After completing Working the Angles, I found there were three specific areas where I received the greatest challenges; prayer, contemplative exegesis, and Sabbath. Having spent the last three years in fulltime work in the Church, Working the Angles, was a good challenge to return to the perspective, practice, and discipline I began those years doing. His words and emotional force cut into my heart with the realization of how little energy and importance I now (and perhaps always) have put on prayer. Most striking, however, was the call to the realization of what prayer really is: "Prayer is a daring venture into speech that juxtaposes our words with the sharply alive words that pierce and divide souls and spirit, joints and marrow, pitilessly exposing every thought and intention of the heart (Heb. 4:12-13; Rev. 1:16) (Peterson 1998, 43)." I had definitely fallen back into a bland routine of praying. I neither was considering Who I was actually communing with or the gravity of my prayers. The sections dealing with prayer in this book have been quite restorative in even helping me to slow down in my prayer and seek God. His words to Pastors on "little prayers" offered at the start of an event or function have also pressed my heart to not take lightly the moments we pray prior to the start of class, chapel, a meal, or bedtime with the children. The second of area of challenge that I found of great benefit was that of contemplative exegesis. He uses a striking illustration from Herman Melville's novel White Jacket to tell how we might get carried away with the technical skills of our life's calling to the actual defeat of what we are striving to accomplish. Already this term I have found this true as we bury deep in research, reading, study, and writing. It is easy for me to strive to read all the texts, gather data, or compose papers and sermons, but to do so devoid of the life found in God's word. Again Working the Angles has been a siren call away from the shoals of academic and scholarly success that could easily end in break up spiritual well being. Prayer and re-realization of a God Who is alive and speaking through His word has been a breath of fresh air. Finally, Peterson's discussion of Sabbath presses upon my heart. I have been struggling to find both rest and Sabbath. Each day I feel the pressure of deadlines and responsibilities, while the tension of family and Church ministry expectations hound my thoughts. Peterson reflections on the Hebrew morning and evening concepts, I pray, will continue to shape my perspective of Who is really at work in my life. He also helped me to re-think what a real Sabbath means and I am seeking to implement a weekly time that restores my perspective on the reality of God, His sovereignty in my life, and healthy disciplines moving forward.

The Heart of the Matter
Format: Paperback
The power, longevity and effectiveness of a church lies in large part on the leadership of its pastor(s). It shouldn't be about his or her administrative skills or ability to jump at every whim a member of the congregation brings forward. It should be about the spiritual life and leadership of the pastor. This isn't about perfection. It's about relationship with God. As a lay person who is active in the local church and works in a ministry to pastors, my heart delights in a pastor who puts God first and everything else in its proper place. You see, when the pastor's hunger for God is alive and well and being fed I can see it, and I have a role model to follow. When the pastor's life demonstrates the results of intimacy with Christ, I am motivated and encouraged. As a lay person, I was brought up short because for too long I have measured my pastors by the to do list he accomplishes and the teaching she does. I have not always allowed them the space to do the most important things - being the guardian and teacher of the word and sacrament, abiding in Christ through prayer, and being the spiritual director I need rather than the quick answer to a problem I bring forward. I stand corrected. My hope is that this book crosses the desk of every pastor in America, to renew his or her call to ministry, to give permission and encouragement in keeping the promises of ordination and installation. It will radically change the pastorate and the Church it ministers to. Well done, Pastor Peterson. Thank you for your honesty, your leadership, and your willingness to be real and tell it like it is.
